Description
Welcome toAntiques & Moore!
This listing is for a gorgeous cup and saucer from the Mount Vernon Collection and was made in Portugal by Mottahedeh. The original of this distinguished dinner service was made in China for the East India Company during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795). It was the dinnerware choice of Nelson Rockefeller, former Vice President of the United States, for the collection he produced with Mildred Mottahdeh in 1976. The design features a wide border design with gilded butterflies with a background of cobalt blue with gilded stars. Alternating between these designs are assorted medallions with a variety of decorations. In the center is an elaborate intertwining gilded monogram. This dinner set became the personal dinner service of President Ronald and Nancy Reagan while in the White House. The cup and saucer are decorated with elaborate gilt embellishment throughout. Marked on bottom "Mottahedeh, VA 1824, Portugal". The design is still available as special order only.
Cup measures 2" high and 3 1/2" in diameter. Saucer measures 5 1/2" in diameter. Combined weight is 7.2 ounces.
This nice cup and saucer are in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws. The gilding and enamel decoration are bright and there are no surface scratches in the center from use. Both pieces appear to have never been used.
