ORIGINAL 1795 NEW YORK CITY TAVERN LICENSE- MAYOR RICHARD VARICK. (Revolutionary War Superpatriot ) Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS First Class.with
Original partly printed license bond to operate a tavern in the 4th ward of the City Of New York , dated March 4th 1795 . Signed by Richard Varick as mayor. John Tuttle promises to pay 50 pounds if he does operate his dwelling house tavern in a lawful manner. Size about 8” x 12 1/2 “.
Richard Varick (1753 - 1831) in the Revolutionary War served under General Philip Schuyler in various posts until after the Battle of Saratoga and then appointed inspector of West Point . At West Point he became an aide to General Benedict Arnold. Although he was no longer serving in this capacity when Arnold deflected to the British. Varick along with David Franks was arrested but subsequently cleared by a court of inquiry. After the West Point incident,Varick served under General George Washington as private secretary until the end of the war.
Varick was a recorder (judge ) for New York City (1783- 1789 ) and then became Attorney General for New York (1778- 1789 ) Later, he was mayor for New York City ( 1791 - 1801 ) in which during the year 1795 this document was signed.
After his service as mayor, Varick, went on to member of the state assembly, bank officer a colonel in the state militia. ( Wikipedia )
Nice condition with very minor chipping on reinforcement on folds. Very bold Varick signature .
